Our task was to design reconstruction of old building of flour mill in town called Kolin in the Czech Republic. We worked in a group of three students and each of us did different part of the site of the mill. After research our group decided to rebuild the mill into the School of Film.
The central part of the whole area is the original building Radimský Mill, is characteristic of meeting of the river, city and nature
I used remaining load-bearing system from timber and the old facade in my design. The building is divided into two parts according to film-making proccess.
In the first part of school is two original floors high space of reception connected with sanitary facilities and cloakroom. On the second floor is freeplan space without dividing partitions, it allows students to see interesting openings through the whole structure of the old mill. The open space is symbol of cloud of ideas, bonds, interpretations and associations that should formate there. In the attic are situated studios for the film crews where they can discuss their projects and have test meetings with actors. Studios are connected to roof-top garden with view on the old city centre beyond the river.
All the inside vertical communications are placed on the facade, it allows to divide the building into different spaces with varios use.
The second part of the mill is centre of individual creative works in posproduction proccess of film making. Both parts are connected with staircases which should symbolize a string connecting all parts of the film production.
